After you run the game and it initializes you'll see its main window on the screen. If everything goes right you will see there a platform with texture. The red label says "2004 Mahjongg version XX". Hold the second mouse button and turn the platform to make sure that animations in the game are fast and smooth enough. If not, go to "Options"->"Visual options..." and try to adjust settings so that the game will work faster. Remember that you can turn the platform with the tiles to change the view during the game. You are one step away from playing. Push the toolbar button "New" to start a new game. The same action can be done by pressing Control+N or selecting "New game..." in the File menu. The following dialog will pop up:
If you press "OK" right then the mahjongg game will be started with default layout. Otherwise you get to select the game you want. In 2004 MAHJONGG version 1r there are 5 game types (Mahjongg, Lines, Tetris, Blocks, Memory). On the left side there is a list of available layouts for the chosen game type. By default the list shows layouts from "2004 Mahjongg\layouts" directory. If you want to open the layout located somewhere else press "Browse..." and browse to your layout. The table in the bottom area of a window contains the best scores achieved on the current layout. You get to input your name in the "Player name" field if you want your scores to be recorded. When you done press "OK" to start the game.
Rules of Mahjongg

Click on the tiles by pairs to remove them all. The only condition is that they must both be free : no tile on them, and at least one side free - no tile on their left or no tile on their right, at least in the original rules. The tiles must be identical, except if they belong to a Flower or a Season family. In this case, they have to be from the same family. You will find only one tile of each kind, i.e. four season tiles and four flower tiles. For the other kinds of tiles, there are four of each (i.e. two pairs) on the board. If you can't find any more pairs press "Hint" button on the toolbar to get a hint. You can also undo your moves up to the beginning of a game using "Undo" and "Redo".
Rules of Lines

The purpose is to remove as many balls as possible. You must form horizontal, vertical or diagonal lines of 5 balls or more. Each turn will add three new balls to the board. You are then allowed to move a ball to another place, provided that it can slide freely on the board to its new position. There are no hints or undo in Lines game. You can always see three balls on the side of a board. Those three will be added to the board after your move.
Rules of Tetris

This is a classic Tetris game. Pieces fall from the top of the screen, and your goal is to form solid lines in order to make them disappear. There are some unusual layouts, that are not flat at the bottom. On such layouts, the lines of 5 or more pieces will disappear.
Rules of Blocks

This game is similar to Tetris, but this time you get to gather colors instead of lines. A three-tile column falls from the top of the screen. You can use the keyboard arrows to move the column, and the up arrow to swap the three tiles between themselves. The purpose is to form columns, rows or diagonals of at least three tiles of the same color. The more tiles are in a "column", the more points you earn. When you form a column, its tiles disappear and the other tiles can fall. If they form another column when falling (it's usually called a "chain reaction"), you get even more points.
Rules of Memory

Initially all the tiles are face down, and you can click on a pair of tiles to see them face up. If they are the same, they will disappear. Otherwise, they will go face down again next time you click. The game stops when you have removed all of the tiles.
Using the Layout Editor
With the layout editor you can create layouts for mahjongg and memoy, and boards for lines, tetris and blocks. To complete a layout, you have to place a maximum of 144 tiles on the board. Clicking with the left button will add a tile at the location of the "cursor-tile". The second click will remove it. The layouts are created layer-by-layer. After you finished one of the layers, just switch to another using the buttons on toolbar. Current layer number is indicated in the right bottom corner. Please note that you won't be able to finish the game if your mahjongg layout has an odd number of tiles. For tetris and blocks games it is recommended to take one of the original boards and just modify them.
Once your layout is finished, you have to save it by pressing "Save" or "Save as". In the first case your layout will be saved with the name of <date-time.lo>, otherwise you will be asked for the name. You can save the layout in one of the following formats: ".lo" for Mahjongg, ".li" for Lines, ".tb" for Tetris, ".bb" for Blocks, and ".ml" for Memory. The structures of those files are the same, but when you play any of the games apart from Mahjongg, only the layer number zero is used.
Performance notes
A 3D graphics accelerator is highly recommended to play 2004 Mahjongg. You'll need a very fast processor to get satisfying performance on a computer without 3D video card. The game works fine with any video card with at least 4Mb RAM, but some of the options like reflections and shadows require a stencil buffer, which may be not supported by some old cards. Therefore the first thing to do to make the game faster is to disable these options. They are marked in the "Visual options" as the performance critical. The following steps may also increase the speed of a game:
Try to switch Windows desktop to 16bpp color mode. This is especially significant if Your 3D video card does not support 32bpp 3D rendering.
Try to make the game's window smaller or decrease desktop resolution. The game will work faster in software and hardware modes both because there are less pixels to render.
Using the smaller textures for tiles, background and platform may increase the speed. You can set any BMP file for the texture in the "Options"->"Textures..."
Make sure you have the latest version of video drivers and all the video settings in Windows and computer BIOS set to optimal.
Disabling the music can increase the speed on some systems.
Please note that the game supposed to work smoothly and quickly, but the frame rate in a game is limited. So if your system is fast, it won't be loaded on 100% just to produce a higher frame rate.
If you've tried all of those steps and the game is still slow, freezes, causes the graphics-related error messages, or shows the blank screen, please send me an email including the information about your computer configuration, operating system and the problem you got.
